Jazz / Developing
Jazz Band
For those who may be new to playing jazz music.
- Recent experience playing an instrument for at least one year is required
- Participants must be able to read standard music notation
- Instruction includes jazz styles, improvisation, and ensemble techniques
Instruments welcome include include flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, bass clarinet, saxophones (alto, tenor or baritone), trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone/euphonium, tuba, electric guitar, bass guitar, string bass, keyboard, drum set, and auxiliary percussion.
Jazz / Intermediate+
Jazz Ensemble
For those who play at least at the intermediate level and are comfortable performing various jazz styles.
- Director approval required
- Membership seniority and instrumentation needs are considered
- Instrumentation is limited to saxophone, trombone, trumpet, drum set/auxiliary percussion, keyboard, bass, bass guitar or string bass, and electric guitar.

Beginner / Refresher
Rising Stars Strings
For those learning to play a string instrument and those needing a refresher. No experience required.
- Group and individual instruction
- Beginning music-reading skills
- Tone and technique development
- Ensemble performance skills
- Violin, viola, cello, and string bass
Note: Beginners may start in the fall semester only.
Developing / Intermediate
Andante Strings
For those who are between the beginner and intermediate levels.
- Continued development of music-reading skills
- Instrument technique and tone development
- Easy to intermediate music selections
- Violin, viola, cello, and string bass
Good fit if: Beginner music feels too easy, but string orchestra music feels too challenging.
Intermediate / Advanced
String Orchestra
For those who read music comfortably, have developed acceptable tone quality, and know most required technique for performance.
- No ensemble experience required
- Emphasis on ensemble performance techniques
- Intonation, tone and musical expression are developed each session
- Intermediate to advanced music selections
- Violin, viola, cello, and string bass
- Spring semester includes one full orchestra selection
Additional opportunity
Small Ensembles
Small ensembles, such as quartets and trios, may also be available.
- Available at no extra cost for members who belong to at least one larger ensemble
- Participants who play only in a small ensemble must pay tuition
- Small ensemble registration is available through the registration page. You must register for a small ensemble if you are not enrolled in one of the large ensembles.
