Rehearsal location and times

New Horizons Music rehearsals are held on Wednesdays at Refuge Hill Church, 5200 Far Hills Ave, Dayotn, OH 45429.

  • Session 1: Symphonic Band, Concert Band, and Rising Stars Band — 9:00–10:30 a.m.
  • Session 2: Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Band, String Orchestra, Andante Strings, and Rising Stars Strings — 11:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
Member expectation: Members are expected to participate in scheduled rehearsals and performances unless there are acceptable reasons not to do so. Planned absences should be recorded in advance through the membership chair.

The open house is a chance to learn about the program, meet directors and members, tour rehearsal facilities, register, and more.

Method books

Some groups use specific method books. Books may be purchased through local music stores, Amazon, Stanton’s Sheet Music, and other vendors that carry sheet music and method books.

Additional member information

A few additional details help members prepare for rehearsals and performances.

Participation and ensemble size

  • There is no limit to the number of participants in Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Rising Stars Band, Rising Stars Strings, Andante Strings, String Orchestra, or Jazz Band.
  • Jazz Ensemble has limited participation because of standard jazz band instrumentation.
  • Members are expected to participate in scheduled rehearsals and performances unless there are acceptable reasons not to do so.

Lessons, instruments, and attire

  • Individual lessons are encouraged but not required. Contact Sheila Reynolds at sheilareynolds62@gmail.com to arrange lessons taught by UD music education students or other area music educators.
  • Instruments may be rented or purchased from any local music dealer. Please see the detailed instrument suggestions provided at the Open House.
  • A limited instrument loan program may be available. Contact Managing Director Jonathon Shaw at jshaw4@udayton.edu for more information.
  • All program members must purchase a concert polo shirt to be worn for performances.

Where are rehearsals held?

Rehearsals are held at Refuge Hill Church, 5200 Far Hills Ave, Dayton OH 45429.

When do rehearsals meet?

New Horizons Music rehearsals are held on Wednesdays. Session 1 meets from 9:00–10:30 a.m. and  Session 2 meets from 11:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. p.m.

Do I need to attend performances?

Members are expected to participate in scheduled rehearsals and performances unless there are acceptable reasons not to do so.

Where can I buy method books?

Method books may be purchased through local music stores, Amazon, Stanton’s Sheet Music, and other vendors that carry sheet music and method books.

Can I rent or borrow an instrument?

Instruments may be rented or purchased from local music dealers. A limited instrument loan program may also be available through New Horizons Music.

Do members need performance attire?

Yes. All program members must purchase a concert polo shirt to be worn for performances.
